Scholarship FAQs

What do I need for my application to be complete?

For the application to be complete, you must fully answer each question on the application form, as well as solicit two letters of recommendation. The letters of recommendation will be completed in a separate form, and you can find the link in the application form, or on our website under “scholarships”. The two letters of recommendation MUST be submitted before your application is considered complete. Ask early and follow up with your recommenders to ensure everything is done before the deadline.

How long does my personal statement need to be?

The personal statement should be approximately 500 words (maximum 750 words).

Can I attach my answers as a document or PDF?

Yes! Only document or PDF files will be accepted, so double check your file type if you are having an issue uploading.

Is there a penalty for turning in my application late?

April 12th, 2024 at 11:59 pm is the hard application deadline. Late applications will not be accepted past that time. Make sure to get your letters of recommendation early and follow up so your application is on time!

Who can write me a letter of recommendation?

You will need letters from a friend or peer, a teacher, or another adult in the community (a coach, boss, youth pastor, mentor, etc.) Letters cannot be from an FNL staff person. When choosing your people, think about those that have a good knowledge of your high school career.

When will I find out if I’ve received a scholarship?

Scholarships winners will be notified by their FNL coordinator in late April or early May. Winners will also be invited to accept their scholarships at the FNL banquet at the end of the year. Scholarship checks will be mailed out after banquet.

What is the Casey Goodwin Memorial Scholarship?

This scholarship is in honor of the memory of Casey Goodwin, an advocate for positive, healthy lifestyles cut short by the very thing she spent her young life fighting against, drunk driving. Casey was only 20 when she was killed by an 18-year-old drinking driver as she traveled home from college for her mother’s birthday. She was devoted to the prevention of alcohol-related issues and was recognized all over the State of California as an advocate for her peers. Casey was a member of the SLO County FNL family. The recipient of this scholarship carries the values and characteristics of Casey and her legacy.

Who should I talk to if I have any questions?

Please reach out to your FNL coordinator if you have any questions. You can also contact the SLO County Coordinator Megan Frauenheim at mfrauenheim@co.slo.ca.us.
